The bungalow

Two storeys, on stilts

The woodwork, up close

The doors are mahogany, inlaid: wedges of opposing grain radiating from an octagonal centre, cut and fitted by hand. The same octagon returns as a medallion on the interior doors.

The blankets are woven on a loom, checked in chocolate and oat. The veranda lamp is woven fibre, and so is the floor mat. Nothing came out of a catalogue.

What it is like to live here

Three things nobody asks about before arriving, and everybody mentions afterwards.

Banco de areia dourada dentro do rio, com a água rasa tão clara que o fundo aparece ondulado pela luz
Clear water · the riverbed in view

Almost no mosquitoes

The clear water and sand beaches of the Arapiuns have far fewer mosquitoes than the floodplain Amazon. Dinner on the sand without repellent is the surprise that comes up most often from people who arrive expecting the opposite.

The shower · no heater

The shower doesn't need a heater

There's no water heater at the Villa, because the climate doesn't call for one. Your shower is the natural water from our own well, at whatever temperature it arrives — and that changes with the season — it's the part that brings guests closest to the place. For drinking, there's a filter: safe water at all times.

There is no television

There is Starlink internet, for keeping in touch. Television, no. At night what there is is conversation, the sound of the river and the urge to sleep early.
